Cashmere Care
Cashmere is a fine, natural, delicate material that would certainly take good care of us ( and our wardrobe) for years to come if we in return take good care of it as well.
In general, try not to wash your cashmere pieces too often. You can let them air in between uses or steam it to freshen it up. ( Do not place steamer directly onto your piece and use a low steam setting). Perfume can stain your piece so try not to spray perfume directly on your cashmere piece. Let your piece rest after each wear as well, wearing it few days in a row is not recommended ( although we can't resist throwing it on!) as the fibres need to relax and return to it's inital shape.
Cleaning
Professional dry cleaning that has cashmere suitable cleaning agents is recommended, however if really necessary you can hand wash your cashmere piece. If you do please follow the cleaning and drying guide closely to ensure you garment is not damaged. Firstly, do use detergents especially made for cashmere ( if you do not have any you can use baby shampoo as well), do not use your normal laundry detergent as it can be too harsh for the fine cashmere hairs. Use a large basin with cold water and turn your garment inside out. Do not scrub it, let it soak for 5-10minute ( you can gently press it) and rinse well with cold water after.
Drying
Do not wring dry your piece. Instead, lay it out flat on a clean, dry towel . You can roll it with the towel to squeeze out the excess water and lay it on a new dry towel where you can also reshape your garment. Always lay flat to dry and not in direct sunlight or heat. Do not hang your garment as it can pull out of shape and do not place it in a tumble dryer. If there are light creases after drying you can use a steamer and gently steam them away. Do not iron your piece and do not place the steamer directly on your cashmere piece. You don't need a professional steamer, a simple small travel steamer would suffice.
Storing
The best way to store your cashmere pieces is by folding them. Do not hang them on a hanger as it can easily pull your piece out of shape. Try not to store them too tightly to avoid creases. If you are putting your pieces away for the season you can place it in a breathable cotton pouch or bag and ensure that your piece is dry especially if you just hand washed it.
Pilling
Pilling is a normal occurrence with cashmere pieces. It is natural to notice it more with new pieces and the first couple of times hand washing it (if you do hand wash it instead of dry cleaning) , however the good thing is it tends to decrease after a few washes. You can use a special cashmere comb to remove it, do not use your own household tools like velcro or scissors as they can easily damage your piece.
